Number Support Flashcards
What is a prime number?
A prime number has exactly two factors, 1 and itself.
Prime numbers less than 30 are
2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23 and 29
What is a square number?
A whole number, when multiplied by itself, gives a square number.
Example: 4 x 4 = 16
First 12 square numbers are
1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144
What is a triangular number?
The triangular numbers can be represented as triangles.
What is a factor?
If one whole number is divisible by another number, then the second number is a factor of the first number.
What is divisibility?
One whole number is divisible by another if, after dividing, the remainder is zero.
Since 18 is divisible by 9, 9 is a factor of 18.
A number is divisable by 2 if
the number is an even number
A number is divisible by 3 if
the sum of its digits is divisible by 3
Example: 198 is divisible by 3 since 1 + 9 + 8 = 18 is divisible by 3.
A number is divisible by 4 if
the last two digits are divisible by 4
Exmaple: 248 is divisible by 4 because 48 is divisible by 4.
A number is divisible by 5 if
the last digit is either 0 or 5
A number is divisible by 6 if
it is divisible by both 2 and 3
A number is divisible by 7 if
you double the last digit and subtract it from the rest of the number and the answer is 0 or divisible by 7
Note: you can apply this rule to that answer again
Example: 672, 2 x 2 = 4, 67 - 4 = 63 which is divisible by 7
905, 5 x 2 = 10, 90 -10 = 80 which is not divisible by 7
A number is divisible by 8 if
the number formed by the last three digits is divisible by 8.
Example: 7,120 is divisible by 8 since 120 is divisible by 8.
A number is divisible by 9 if
the sum of the digits is divisible by 9.
Example: 549 is divisible by 9 since the sum of the digits is 18 (5+4+9=18), and 18 is divisible by 9.
