Q

What are reals?

A

The rationals and irrationals put together. The reals will include every possible number you could meet in the course

Q

Are non-recurring, non-terminating decimals rational numbers?

A

Non-recurring, non-terminating decimals (i.e. they carry on forever + never repeat) can never be written as a fraction so they are irrational numbers

17
Q

What is 2^0?

A

18
Q

What does a negative power mean?

A

A negative power means ‘take the reciprocol’

19
Q

What does a^-n mean?

A

1 / a^n

20
Q

Which is the power and which is the root?

3^-(2/5)

A

Remember a carrot
The roots are at the bottom
The power from the sun is at the top

2 = power
5 = root
21
Q

Why is standard form useful for converting units?

A

e.g. To convert kilometres to millimetres, you need to multiply by 1000 and 1000 again, ie. by 10^6.

So 4km = 4 x 10^6mm

22
Q

How many cm^2 is 4m^2 ?

A

4m^2 = 4 x 100 x 100 = 40,000cm^2

23
Q

How many mm^2 is 3.1cm^2 ?

A

3.1cm^3 = 3.1 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 3100mm^3

24
Q

What is 1ml in cm?

A

1ml = 1cm^3

25
Q

How many cm^3 in 1 litre?

A

1 litre = 1000 cm^3

26
Q

How do you convert a speed of 65km per hour into metres per second (m/s) ?

A
  • In 1 hour, the no. of metres travelled will be a bigger number than the no. of km // so multiply by 1000
  • In 1 second, the distance travelled will be less than in 1 hours, so divide by 3600
  • 65kmh = (65x1000)/3600 = 18.1m per second
27
Q

How do you estimate an answer ?

A

By using 1sf throughout
