Q

Rational number

A

Can be written as fractions, come in 3 different forms: 1. Integers e.g. 4(=4/1), -5(=-5/1), -12(=-12/1) 2. Fractions e.g. 1/4 3. Terminating or recurring decimals e.g. 0.33333… 1/3

Q

What does LCM mean, and how do you use it?

A

‘Least Common Multiple’

e.g. 18 = 2 x 3²x and 30 = 2 x 3 x 5

find the LCM of 18 and 30

Q

18 = 2 x 3²x and 30 = 2 x 3 x 5

find the LCM of 18 and 30

A

18 = 2 x 3 x 3 and 30 = 2 x 3 x 5

so the prime factors that appear in either number are 2, 3 , 3, 5 (list 3 twice as it appears in 18)

LCM = 2 x 3 x 3 x 5 = 90

Q

180= 2² x 3² x 5 and 84 = 2² x 3 x 7

Use this to find the HCF of 180 and 84

A

180 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 x 5 and 84 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 7

2, 2 and 3 are prime factors of both numbers, so HCF = 2 x 2 x 2 = 12

What is the rule and what are the 3 rules?

A

A x 10^n

  1. A must be between 1 and 10
  2. The power of 10, n, is the number of places the decimal point moves
  3. n is positive for big numbers, n is negative for small numbers
