Q

What do exponents indicate?

A

Repetitive multiplication. E.g. 5 to the power of 3 = 5 x 5 x5 = 125 or 2 to the power of 2 = 2 x 2 = 4

17
Q

What if you get an equation such as.. (-4)to the power of 2?

A

= -4 x -4 = 16

=negative x negative = positive

18
Q

What about? (3 x 4) to the power of 2?

A

Use BEDMAS to solve. Start with the brackets 4 x 3 = 12

Then multiply by the exponent 12 to the power of 2 = 144

19
Q

What are the significant figures in a number?

A

The total number of digits that are needed to accurately represent a number.

20
Q

When are zeros significant?

A

When they are inbetween other significant digits. When working out whether a zero is significant or not thing is the zero adding detail or is it just a place holder?

21
Q

When are zeros unsignificant?

A

At the front and end of a number e.g. 0.003 1sf

22
Q

How do you round something with more than 2sf too 2sf?

A

Cut the number off after the first two sf and then use place holders to maintain value.
