Nullification definition
In this case, nullification means to ignore a law that was passed that you don’t like. States can nullify laws
Secession definition
To leave the country that you belong to and either join a different country or make your own country
States’ rights definition
The rights and powers held by the US states instead of the federal government
South Carolina (importance)
the states’ rights supporters of South Carolina proclaimed their right to nullify, or reject, both the 1828 and 1832 tariff laws. They also threatened to secede, but backed down after Jackson threatened them
John C. Calhoun (importance)
John C. Calhoun, called on southern states to declare the tariff illegal. Soon after, his political alliance with Jackson shattered
Force bill (importance)
To scare South Carolina into not seceding, Jackson passes the force bill that allowed him to use the army to collect tariffs
