Nucleus Flashcards
Name the parts of the nucleus.
Nucleolus
Outer membrane
Inner membrane
Nuclear envelope
Pore in nuclear envelope
Nucleoplasm
How big is the nucleus?
It’s ca. 10-20 nanometers - it’s the largest organelle!
What type of membrane does the nucleus have?
It has a phospholipid bilayer membrane!
What is special about the nuclear membrane?
It has pores unlike any other membrane.
What does the outer membrane folded to form?
It’s folded to form RER (continuous with nuclear envelope).
What is the main function of the nucleus?
Stores DNA - this prevents damage in cytoplasm!
What does the nucleolus do?
It manufactures rRNA and ribosomes.
What else does the nucleus do?
It controls cell activity through production of mRNA - the nuclear pore allows the mRNA to leave the nucleus.
