Nucleotide Metabolism, Chromosome Structure Flashcards
What are the functions of Nucleotides?
Energy for metabolism example is ATP
- it can act as an enzyme cofactor (NAD+)
- it can participate in signal transductoin (cAMP)
WHat are the funtions of nucleic acid?
stoarge of genetic information in the form of DNA,
- moves genetic information, like mRNA
- it processes geentic info like ribozymes
- it synthesises proteins (tRNA and rRNA)
What are thecomponets of a nucleotide?
pentose, nitrogenous base, phosphate
What are the componets of a nucleoside?
nitrogenous base and pentose
what are the componets of a nucleobase?
Nitrogenous base
what are nucleobases?
They are derivatives of pyrimidine or purine. the are nitrogen containing heteroaromatic molecules. Planar or almost planar structure. ABosrb UV light around 250-270 nm
What pyrimidine bases?
cytosine (DNA + RNA), Uracil(RNA), thymine (DNA)
what are purine bases?
Adenosine and guanine both are in RNA and DNA
WHat is the difference betweewn deoxy and oxy ribonucleotide or side?
The presence of OH group. OH on 2nd prime carbon = oxyribo
lack of = deoxy
Where is the B-N-glycosidic bond formed in a nucleotide? Describe the stability of the bond and its rotation
between anomeric carbon of pentose and position N1 in pyrimindines or potion N9 in purines
, very stable bond to hydrolysis. Can be cleaved by acid. Free nucleotide means free rotationaly bond
What are the structural units of RNA?
Structural units of ribonucleoic acids are ribonucleotides
What are the structural units of DNA?
The structural units of deoxyribonucleic acids are deoxyribonucleotides
