Nucleic Acids And The Central Dogma Of The Cell Flashcards
Are polymers in which the monomer units are nucleotides.
Nucleic Acids
Bases that are Purines (Double-ring)
Adenine and Guanine
Bases that are pyrimidines (single-ring)
Cytosine, Uracil, and Thymine
Difference of Purines: Adenine and Guanine
Adenine (NH2 is on top of the second ring and without O)
Guanine (contains double bond and O at the top of the second ring)
Carries instructions for protein synthesis (genetic information) from DNA
mRNA
Facilitates the conversion of hnRNA to mRNA.
– Contains from 100 to 200 nucleotides
Small Nuclear RNA
Combines with specific proteins to form ribosomes
- the physical site for protein synthesis
- Ribosomes have molecular masses on the order of 3 million
Ribosomal RNA
Delivers amino acids to the sites for protein synthesis and are the smallest (75–90 nucleotide units)
tRNA
A process that ultimately leads to the formation of several different protein variants from a single gene
Alternative Splicing
