Nucleic acids Flashcards
Whats the structure of a nucleotide as the monomer from which nucleic acids are made?
Nucleotide is made up of pentose sugar, a nitrogen - containing orgainic base and a phosphate group.
What is Nucleotide?
It is the monomer of nucleic acid(DNA AND RNA)
What are the differences between RNA and DNA.
1 - RNA is single stranded while DNA is double stranded.
2- RNA has the bases A, G , C AND U whereas DNA has A,C,G AND T.
3- RNA has ribose sugar whereas DNA has deoxiribose sugar.
WHat is the structure of ADP?
Adensoine diphosphate (ADP) is a biological molecule consisting of the sugar ribose, the base adenine and two phosphate groups.
What are purines and pyrimadines.
Purines consist of bases Guanine, adenine.(GAP)
Pyrimadines consist of bases Thymine, cytosine.(CTA).
What is a polynucleotide?
A polynucleotide is many nucleotides joined together. The bond holding the nucleotides together is 3’-5’ phosphodiester bond, formed through condensation reaction. Many polynucleotides make sugar phosphate backbone of DNA and RNA.
What is the structure of ATP?
Adensoine triphosphate (ATP) is another biological molecule. It contains same ribose sugar and base adenine as ADP. but contains 3 phosphate groups.
Why is ATP important?
ATP provides the cells with energy to perform daily tasks.
How is phosphorylated nucleotide?
When a nucleotide gets a phosphate group added to it, it becomes phosphorylated.
What is the structure of DNA?
DNA contains 2 polynucleotide strands running in opposite directions. Called antiparallel strands ( opposite sides). These are held by hydrogen bonds, 3 between C and G. 2 between A and T. The antiparallel strands twist around each other to form a double helix.
