Nucleic Acids Flashcards
What are the building blocks of nuclei acids
Nucleotides
What do the nucleotides contain?
A base, sugar and a phosphate
What sugar is in DNA and what sugar is in RNA?
Deoxyribose in DNA and ribose in RNA
What is 1’, 2’, and 5’ linked to?
1’: linked to a base
2’: liked to the OH (RNA), or H (DNA)
5’: linked to phosphate group
What 2 groups are there in bases? What bases are under them?
Pyrimidine and Purine
Pyrimidine: Cytosine, thiamine, and uracil (rna)
Purine: Guanine, adenine
When bases bond with sugar, they are called…? Name each one of them
Nucleosides.
Adenosine, guanosine
Uridine, Thymidine, cytidine
What is ATP?
Major compound that stores and transfers energy in all metabolism
How do nucleotides polymerize?
The condensation reaction occurs from the hydroxyl in sugar and phosphate to release water. The 3’ group from the sugar.
What is a phosphodiester bond?
The hydroxyl group from 3’ joins with the hydroxyl group from the phosphate to release water and to create a bond between the sugar and the phosphate.
