Nuclear radius Flashcards
Nucleons =
protons + neutrons
Graph of nuclear radius (y) against nucleon number (x)
curved r shape from origin
Nuclear radius, R =
r0 * A^1/3
Where R is the nuclear radius, r0 is the radius of a single nucleon (about 10-15m) and A is the nucleon number.
Nuclear radius is of the order of
1fm = 10^-15m
Radius of atom ~
0.05nm
Mass of proton =
1 atomic mass unit, u = 1.66x10^-27 kg
Show how density relates to nucleon number
Density, p = m/v = Au/(4/3 * pi * R^3) = 3Au/4Apir0 = 3u/4pir0 = constant
therefore density is constant, independent of its nucleon number and the same throughout the nucleus - nucleon separation is the same regardless of the size of the nucleus and therefore evenly separated inside the nucleus
The nucleus is under the influence of:
Strong nuclear force - holding nucleons together
Electrostatic force of repulsion - pushing protons apart
