103.1 Discuss the history and development of SOCOM.
Lack of command and control (C2) and inter-service coordination led to the failure of Operation Eagle Claw, the 1980 American embassy hostage rescue mission in Iran. In response, the United States established SOCOM (United States Special Operations Command) on April 16, 1987. SOCOM plays a pivotal role in overseeing and coordinating special operations forces (SOF) and has been instrumental in the Global War on Terror.
103.2 History and development of JSOC
Joint Special Operations Command is a component of SOCOM. Ensures interoperability, trains forces, and conducts missions. Established in 1980.
103.3 History and development of NAVSPECWARCOM
Was est.16
April 1987 on NAB, is the naval component of SOCOM focused on maritime SOF.
103.4 SOF Forces’ role in WWII
Excelled at covert and unconventional warfare. Some of the notable examples:
- Suffered heavy casualties, but did a lot of work during the Normandy invasion. Did a lot of recon, underwater demolition. NCDU blew a lot of holes in German defenses.
103.5 SOF Forces role in Korea
Conducted reconnaissance and underwater demolition, supported amphibious operations along the Korean coastline.
