Q

103.1 Discuss the history and development of SOCOM.

A

Lack of command and control (C2) and inter-service coordination led to the failure of Operation Eagle Claw, the 1980 American embassy hostage rescue mission in Iran. In response, the United States established SOCOM (United States Special Operations Command) on April 16, 1987. SOCOM plays a pivotal role in overseeing and coordinating special operations forces (SOF) and has been instrumental in the Global War on Terror.
