NST Flashcards
What is the definition a reactive NST?
Two or more fetal heart accelerations of 15 bpm above baseline and last at least 15 seconds within a 20 minute time period
What are the four types of pelvises?
gynecoid, android, anthropoid, platypelloid
What are the stages of labor?
Latent or early phase, active phase, transition phase
What is SROM and AROM?
SROM- spontaneous rupture of membranes, AROM-Artificial rupture of membranes
What are Braxton Hicks contractions?
irregular, intermittent contractions that occur throughout pregnancy
What is the amount of time that has elapsed if a placenta is considered a retained placenta?
30 minutes
What is an IUPC?
Intrauterine pressure catheter-it is inserted directly into uterus and measures contraction intensity and uterine resting tone.
What is a VBAC?
Vaginal Birth After Cesarean
What is normal range for FHR?
110 - 160 bpm
What does a late deceleration of fetal heart rate indicate?
uteroplacental insufficiency (fetal hypoxia)
What does a variable deceleration of fetal heart rate indicate?
cord compression
What are nursing measures to provide alternative comfort measures during labor?
frequent position changes, breathing and relaxation techniques, warm or cold packs, birthing balls, massage, hydrotherapy
What are the 5 assessments of the APGAR?
Heart rate, color, reflex, muscle tone, respiratory effort
What is “lightening”?
Lightening is when the fetus begins to drop and settle into the pelvic inlet (engagement). This movement eases breathing due to no longer pressing on the diaphragm.
What is “False Labor”?
Contractions are irregular and do not change. Walking has no effect on or lessens contractions. No change in cervical dilation or effacement with contractions. Discomfort is usually only in the abdomen. Rest and warm tub baths lessen contractions.
What is “True Labor”?
Contractions are at regular intervals and increase by getting closer together and increase in intensity and duration. Cervical dilation and effacement are progressing and changing with contractions. Contractions intensity usually increases with walking and do not decrease with warm tub bath or rest. Discomfort usually begins in back and radiates around to abdomen.
What are some side effects of epidural anesthesia?
hypotension, nausea and vomiting, shaking or shivering (we call these the epidural shakes), itching, urinary retention, elevated maternal temperature
What is the primary danger for a pregnant patient who has to have a cesarean section and has general anesthesia?
fetal depression
What is a cerclage?
It is a surgical procedure where a stitch is placed in the cervix to prevent spontaneous abortion or premature birth, it is usually placed within the late first trimester or early second trimester.
