Purpose of the NSQHS
Protect the public from harm and improve the quality of health care provision
Provide a QA mechanism that tests whether relevant systems are in place to ensure that expected standards of safety and quality are met
Intention of recognising and responding to acute deterioration
Ensure that a patients acute deterioration is recognised promptly and appropriate action is taken
Included physiological changes, as well as changes in cognition and mental state
Criteria of Recognising Acute Deterioration
Responding to acute deterioration
- Appropriate and timely care is provided to patients whose condition is acutely deteriorating
Detecting and recognising acute deterioration, and escalating care
- Deterioration is detected and recognised and action is taken to escalate

What are the six actions specific to meet the needs of aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders health
- Partnering with consumers: working in partnership with aboriginal communities to meet their needs
- Clinical governance: addressing health needs of aboriginal people, implementing and monitoring strategies, increasing cultural competency of the workforce, creating a welcoming environment
- Comprehensive care standard: having a process for identifying people of aboriginal origin
Intention of standard 4
clinicians safely prescribe, dispense and administer appropriate medicines, and monitor medicine use. It also aims to ensure that consumers are informed about medicines, and understand their own medicine needs and risks.
