NSAIDS Flashcards
1
Q
What is analgesic ?
A
Analgesic are drugs which relieve pain without causing loss of consciousness.
2
Q
Types of analgesics?
A
- Opioid or narcotic
2. Non-opioid or non-narcotic
3
Q
What is NSAIDS?
A
Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
4
Q
How NSAIDS differs from opioids?
A
- NSAIDs are analgesic without opioid receptor.
- They act as anti pyretic
- They have anti-inflammatory property
- They have anti-platelet effect
- Do not cause sedation or sleep
- Non-addictive
5
Q
Mechanism of actions of NSAIDs?
A
-it inhibit the activity of cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX1 and COX 2) which are nessary for production of prostaglandins
6
Q
The pathways NSAIDs affect pain pathways? 3
A
- Decrease prostaglandins activation threshold at peripheral termination or efferent neuron.
- NSAIDs decrease the recruitment of lymphocytes thus they decrease production of leukocytes derived inflammatory mediators
- They cross blood brain barrier and prevent generation of prostaglandins that acts as pain producing neuro modulators in a spinal cord
7
Q
Adverse effects of NSAIDs?
A
- CNS- headache, tinnitus, dizziness
- CVS-fluid retention, oedema, hypertension, congestive heart failure
- GIT- abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, ulcer, gastritis
- all NSAID are gastric irritants and can be associated with GI ulcers to some extent - Haematological- thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, aplastic anaemia
- Hepatic- abnormal liver function
- Kidney - renal insufficiency, renal failure, proteinurea, hyperkalemia,
- Pulmonary- asthma
- Skin- Rashes, pruritus
8
Q
Classification of non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs?
A
- Non- selective COX inhibitors
- Preferentical COX2 inhibitor
- Selective COX2 inhibitors
- Analgesic antipyretic
