Ns1 Flashcards
What is a cell?
The smallest unit of all living organisms.
What does microscopic mean?
Something that is so small that it can only be seen when using a microscope.
What is DNA?
The material found in cells that carries the hereditary information.
What are organelles?
Specialised structures found inside living cells that perform specific functions for the cell.
What is the basic unit of all living organisms?
The cell.
What can only be seen using a microscope?
Anything that is microscopic.
Do all cells have the same basic structure?
Yes, all cells, whether they are plant or animal cells, have the same basic structure.
What is the cell membrane?
The outer boundary of the cell that surrounds the contents of the cell and is selectively permeable.
What is cytoplasm?
A jelly-like substance that fills cells, consisting of water with a complex collection of structures and materials.
What is the function of cytoplasm?
It provides a liquid medium for all the chemical reactions that take place inside the cell.
What is the role of mitochondria?
They are involved in respiration and energy production from glucose.
What is a vacuole?
A storage structure in cells, usually containing water, salts, and other substances.
