NS Spinal cord Flashcards
Conus medullaris?
= L-2 End of the spinal cord
Cuada equina?
Made of N roots L-2 to S-5 collection of N roots
Filum terminale?
Threadlike, non-neural filament that begins at the conus medullaris and is attached to the coccyx
Which part of the spinal cord is the “butterfly”?
Gray matter
Top of the “h” or “butterfly?
Posterior horn
Bottom of the “h” or “butterfly”?
Anterior horn
Where are the dorsal coumns of the spinal cord?
Posteriomedial portion of spinal cord
White matter contains?
Ascending (sensory) and Descending (motor) nerve fiber pathways.
What accounts for a stroke on one side of the brain affecting the other side of the body?
Crossover of nerve pathways in the white matter of the spinal column.
Which pathway in the spinal cord is important for a PTA to know? Why? Wher is it?
The corticospinal tract, it is significant to mm control, it is located lateral to the posterior column and the posterior horn. (lateral portion of the spinal cord altogether)
Where does the corticospinal tract originate from? Where does it cross over? Synapse?
The motor area of the cerebral cortex, it crosses over near the lower part of the brain stem. Synapse in the ant horn just before leaving the SC
Motor neurons above the synapse of the CS tract are what neurons?
Below it are the?
Upper motor
Lower motor neurons
Injury that occurs proximal to the ant. horn are considered ______?
What diagnoses are associated with thes?
Upper motor neuron lesions.
SCI, MS, parkinsons, CVA, head injuries.
SC injuries that occur below the anterior horn are called?
What are 5 DX associated with them?
Lower motor neuron lesions.
MD, poliomyelitis, myasthenia gravis, peripheral nerve injuries.
What does the dorsal (posterior) ramus innervate?
MM and skin of the posterior trunk
