Why is Cannon’s theory been criticized? Why does it not hold up today?
A
Research has been limited to animals and men. Women have unique responses that stem from estrogen exposure and the influence of the limbic system, the emotional center.

What is GAS?
A
General Adaption syndrome. It lists three stages:
- Alarm stage - including sympathetic and corticosteroid.
- Resistance stage - Usually stressors are overcome.
- Exhaustion stage - If stressor is not resolved, resources are depleted and stress becomes chronic.

What are the mediators of the stress response?
A
- Stressors - Physical or Psychological
- Perception - influenced, by age, gender, culture, lifestyle..
- Individual temperament - influenced by factors such as genetic structure, outlook on life, vulnerability, coping, childhood….
- Social support - Can act as a significant buffer.
