Why is Cannon’s theory been criticized? Why does it not hold up today?

A

Research has been limited to animals and men. Women have unique responses that stem from estrogen exposure and the influence of the limbic system, the emotional center.

What is GAS?

A

General Adaption syndrome. It lists three stages:

  1. Alarm stage - including sympathetic and corticosteroid.
  2. Resistance stage - Usually stressors are overcome.
  3. Exhaustion stage - If stressor is not resolved, resources are depleted and stress becomes chronic.

What are the mediators of the stress response?

  1. Stressors - Physical or Psychological
