What are common impairments seen in pts with PD?
Tremor, hypokinesia, bradykinesia, freezing, dystonia, poor balance.
What sort of treatment should be used initially to improve walking limitations and impairments in pts with PD?
Treadmill training with BWS. Benefits include increased step length and walking speed. Also improves cardiovascular endurance and 6 MWT.
What sorts of exercise therapy improves balance and reduces rates of falls for pts with PD?
Tai Chi, Boxing and dance. Intense balance training can also improve balance.
What considerations are important to consider with exercise prescription for pts with PD?
Poor patient adherence to programs is very common due lack of motivation in PD pts. To overcome this barrier, can enrol PD pts into classes that are ran a certain times and days with other PD pts. Incorporates a social component and makes others accountable to pts attending classes.
What is the dosage of Tai Chi to gain the benefits associated in pts with PD?
60 minute sessions, 2 x a week, for at least 24 weeks.
What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Is a neurodegenrative disorder where the immune system destroys the myelin sheath on neurons.
What considerations are needed before exercise prescription for pts with MS?
When they experience fatigue and heat sensitivity (experienced by 60-90% of pts with MS). Prior to any new exercise program prescription, the PT should consult the pts physician.
