Nozzles & Combustion Chambers Flashcards
What material are nozzles made from and why?
Stainless steel or combination of stainless steel and brass. To withstand pressure, tempeture and a variety of fuels in combustion environments .
What are the three vital functions a nozzle does for an oil burner?
Atomizing
Metering
Pattering
What PSI is a typical nozzle rated for?
100 PSI
What are the three spray patterns of a nozzle?
Hollow, solid,semi solid
Hollow nozzle?
Most droplets at outer edge with no droplets in center. Used on low firing rate burners.
Solid nozzle?
Droplets are more
Uniform. Best where long fires are required.
Semi solid nozzle?
Has a small solid center and outer droplets.
How we determine flow rate?
Smallest firing rate that will adequately heat the building on the coldest day of the year
What nozzle should be used for burners with flow rates up to 2 PSI?
Hollow
What nozzle should be used with burners with flow rates between 2-3GPH?
Hollow or solid pending on burner air.
What nozzle should be used with burners with firing rates above 3 GPH?
Solid
What is coking of a nozzle?
Over heating of nozzle. Air tube to close to chamber causes nozzle to overheat.
How do we deal with cold oil in affects with nozzle problems?
Install oil line heater or increase pump pressure to decrease droplet size and better define spray angle.
How would a nozzle get hot?
- bad draft
- old brick chamber
- after drip
- retention head to far into chamber
How to you fix overheating of a nozzle?
- post purge
- draft inducer
- interrupted ignition
- ceramic chamber liners
- end cone amulets
