Q

Tensile Strength test

A

There are two parts and forces that are part of the test - the amount of force applied and the Elongation of the matieral piece.

  • In the first part of the test is a steep straight line, in this area the material behaves elastically.
  • Then as the material is pulled to a certain point, plastic deformation occurs and a change in the amount of force shown.
  • After a certain strain, the force increases again gradually, as a result the peice strain hardens, the piece now gets longer and thinner keeping its cylindrical shape.
  • A neck now forms in at a point in the piece, all strain is now moved to one point in the material called the neck.
  • The test piece then fractures at the neck.
