November 2019 Flashcards
What is an autotrophic organism?
Autotrophs produce their own food from inorganic carbon sources and light (photosynthesis) or chemicals (chemosynthesis)
What is a heterotrophic organism?
A heterotroph uses organic carbon as a source of nourishment, something that is derived from another living organisms.
What is pH measuring?
pH is a measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution.
- A low pH indicates a higher number of ions, and a more acidic solution.
- A high pH indicates a higher number of hydroxide ions, and a more basic solution.
- A nutral pH is 7.0, pure water at 25°C
What are the 3 elements of a good strategy?
- A diagnosis:
- A guiding policy
- A set of coherent actions
Diagnosis: A simplified summary of the challange you are facing.
Guiding policy: The overall approach that will be taken to overcome the challange in the diagnosis.
Coherent actions: The specific set of actions that will be taken to impliment the guiding policy.
Deaminase
an enzyme that is involved in the process of Deamination in which the process removes an amine group (NH2) from a molecule through hydrolysis.
Hydrolysis
any chemical reaction in which a molecule of water ruptures one or more chemical bonds.
Proteases
are enzymes that break the peptide bonds of proteins; they are divided into acid, neutral, and alkaline proteases.
TAN
total ammonia nitrogen, or NH3 and NH4+
NH3
NH3 (ammonia) is a gas and sometimes called toxic or free ammonia
NH4+
NH4+ (ammonium) is a nontoxic salt. It is the ionised form of ammonia
Catabolism
Breakdown of complex molecules in living organisms to form simplier ones, together with the release of energy; destructive metabolism.
NO2-
Nitrite
NO3-
Nitrate
