Defintiions of different types of nouns
Noun
Used to name a person, place, thing, or idea.
Proper Noun
A particular person, place, or thing and are typically captitalized.
Examples: White House, St. Mary’s Hospital, Kleenex
Common Nouns
Do not name a particular person, place, or thing.
Examples: woman, city, building, patient, doctor, president
Abstract Nouns
Name qualities, characteristics, or ideas.
Examples: beauty, strength, love, courage
Concrete Nouns
Objects that can be perceived by the senses.
Examples: pen, desk, chart, medication
Collective Nouns
A group of persons/things regarded as a unit.
Examples: board (of directors), committee, pair, couple, family, staff
Compound Nouns
Composed of more than one word.
Examples: St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Oakdale Cancer Treatment Clinic, First National Bank
