Q

What is ATC clearance?

AND

What are the 2 types of clearance depending on the flight times of an ac from an airfield to controlled airspace?

A

ATC clearance is authorisation for an ac to proceed under conditions specified by an ATC unit.

Types of clearance:

i. Pre-flight - point of entry within 10 minutes flying time from aerodrome of departure.
ii. In-flight - point of entry more than 10 minutes flying time from aerodrome of departure.

Note: During the issue of any pre-flight Clearance, the phrases ‘Take-off’ or ‘After Take-off’ should not be used. The Phrase ‘After Departure’ may be used but the ac is not to proceed beyond the Holding Position until ATC has issued the clearance to ‘Line up’ or ‘Take-off’ as a separate message.

Q

What action must be taken when pre-flight clearance is necessary?

A

a. When the ac taxies, telephone the appropriate CAS ATSU (Airways Sector or Zone Control) and request pre-flight ATC clearance, passing ETD and basic flight details.
b. The clearance should be written down and read back to the CAS ATSU.
c. The full clearance message should be passed to the pilot on RT and a correct read-back obtained.
d. The ATD should be passed to the civil controller concerned.
e. If a delay of 3 mins or more beyond the ETD given occurs the clearance should be re-confirmed or a new clearance requested.

Q

What is the maximum height of the UKLFS?

AND

What is the composition of the UKDLFS?

A

a. The UKLFS comprises the airspace vertically from surface to 2000ft AGL/AMSL.
b. The UKDLFS is divided into 20 LFAs, 6 of which have Dedicated User Area status; 3 Tactical Training Areas (TTA); the Highlands Restricted Area (HRA); and the Thames Valley Avoidance Area (TVAA).
i. Three TTAs (7T, 14T and 20T) enable operational low flying by Tornado and C-130 ac and are activated by NOTAM. When active all other ac are subject to additional height restrictions.
ii. The HRA within LFA 14 is an area where IMC Terrain Following Radar is permitted.
iii. The TVAA limits LF in the Greater London area.

Q

When is a military fixed wing ac considered to be low flying?

AND

With respect to low flying, what is the definition of MSD?

A

Military ac are considered to be low flying as follows:

i. Fixed Wing Ac (including Tucano). Fixed Wing (FW) ac (>5700kg MAUW but including Hawk and Tucano) are considered to be low flying when operating below 2000ft Minimum Separation Distance (MSD), except when directed by Air Traffic Control, or during departure and arrival at an airfield, or during an emergency, or when making a precautionary or forced landing.
ii. Light Propeller Driven Ac (<5700kg MAUW excluding Tucano) and Rotary Wing (RW) are considered to be day low flying when operating below 500ft MSD, except when directed by Air Traffic Control, or during departure and arrival at an airfield or RW landing site, or during an emergency, or when making a precautionary or forced landing. Light Propeller Driven and RW ac are to comply with the airspace reservations listed in this document when operating between the surface and 2000ft AGL/AMSL.

Minimum Separation Distance (MSD): When flying at less than 2000 ft above the surface, MSD is the authorized minimum separation, in all directions, between any part of an ac in flight and the ground, water or obstacle. MSD does not apply during take-off or landing or to the separation between ac in the same formation.
