Notes 7 Flashcards
What are the four underlying causes of WW1?
Alliance system, armament race, economic and colonial rivalry and rise of extreme nationalism
What was the direct cause of WW1?
It was the Sarajevo Incident. A Bosnian student, Gavrilo Princip from the Black Hand, assassinated Archduke Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, in Sarajevo. Austria-Hungary then sent an ultimatum to Serbia but Serbia refused to accept the last demand. Austria-Hungary started a local war with Serbia and this turned into the First World War.
What did G show AH to show unlimited support?
A blank cheque.
What was in the ultimatum?
Serbia had to stop all anti-Austrian activities
- Serbia had to dismiss all anti-Austrian officials.
- AH would send officials to Serbia to ensure that the demands were carried out.
What was the Schlieffen Plan?
- Attack Belgium
- Defeat France within six weeks as Germany guessed Russia would need six weeks to complete mobilization.
- Fight with Russia.
Problems with the Schlieffen Plan
In the 1839 Treaty of London, Belgium’s neutrality was guaranteed by Britain because Belgium’s location was important to Britain’s national defence. As Germany destroyed Belgium’s neutrality, Britain was discontented and started a war on Germany. WW1 started.
