Notes Flashcards
Yellow tubes or glass bottles. Draw aerobic then anaerobic. Test for fungi, bacteria, viruses
Yellow (Blood Cultures)
Fill completely to maintain ratio of nine parts blood to one part sodium citrate. Calcium salts formed remove calcium
Light Blue (Coagulants)
Serum separated by centrifugation.
Red Glass
Must sit 30 minutes to clot, then serum is separated by centrifugation.
Red Plastic (Serum)
Contains gel to separate blood from serum during centrifugation.
Tiger Top (Serum) Gold (Serum)
Quickly clots blood. Used for STAT serum chemistries
Orange (Serum)
Inactivates thrombin and thromboplastin. Use sodium heparin for lithium level; either for ammonia level
Dark Green (Plasma)
Anticoagulants with lithium, contains Plasma Separating Tube (PST) gel
Light Green (Plasma)
Complete Blood Count (CBC). Most common blood test. EDTA inhibits clotting by binding calcium. Full draw
Lavender/Purple (Whole Blood)
Forms calcium salts to remove calcium and inhibit clotting
Pink (Whole Blood)
Antiglycolytic agent preserves glucose up to five days: Full draw to adequately test glucose.
Gray (Whole Blood)
Used to test for trace elements (zinc, copper, lead, mercury) and for toxicology
Royal Blue (Specials)
Used for lead testing. Certified chemically cleaned to contain
Tan (Specials)
