What is cholera?
A bacterial infection in the intestines that causes diarrhea.
What is vibrio?
A waterborne group of bacteria that causes cholera
Where did cholera first emerge from?
Calcutta, India. Then spread to Asia, Middle East and Russia.
Who first discovered cholera?
An Italian scientist named filippo pacini in 1854 as a bacteria (they thought it was caused by a smell).
What are the onset of these symptoms?
A few hours. Can last up to 5 days.
What are these symptoms?
Rapid heart rate, loss of skin elasticity,
Dry mucous membranes,
Low blood pressure, thirst, muscle cramps.
What are the mortality rates?
80% of cholera victims are successfully treated.
How is cholera transmitted?
Through human excretions that seep into water sources.
How can one be expose to cholera?
By drinking, or washing their face with cholera contaminated water.

How is cholera tested?
Identification of cholera by culture of a Stool sample, and use of Cary Blair media; an agar with a high pH which suppresses growth of intestinal flora.

Check if disease has spread in current area.
