Anaphora
deliberate repetition of the first part of the sentence in order to achieve an artistic effect.
Epistrophe
turning upon, indicates the same word returns at the end of each sentence. Repetition of phrases or words at the end of the sentence.
Asyndeton
unconnected. Intentionally eliminate conjunctions between the phrases.
Polysyndeton
bound together. use of conjunctions that are used to to join successive words, phrases, or clauses.
Synedoche
part of something that represents the whole or it may use a whole to represent a part.
“gray beard” to old man
“boots” to soldiers
Tone
attitude of writer toward a subject or an audience
Process analysis
step by step breakdown of the phases of the process, used to convey the details of each phase of thinking.
Syntax
a set of rules in a language. dictates how words from different parts of speech are put together in order to convey a complete thought. how we choose to arrange our words.
Provocative diction
the purposeful choice of words serving or tending to provoke, excite, or stimulate a provocative question that will frame a rhetorical argument.
Classification
action or process of classifying something according to shared qualities or characteristics. often a strategy of argumentation or an argumentative response in an effort to provide the reader with structure to your argument.
Understatement
opposite of hyperbole or overstatement.
“you win 10 million dollars and only say “that’s cool” that is an understatement
Colorful diction
very purposeful word choice that will serve to accentuate meaning and tone
Counterargument
set of reasons put forward to oppose an idea or theory developed in another argument.
Claim
gives an argument to support his/her position. different reasons are usually presented to prove why a certain point should be accepted as logical.
Evidence
appears in different categories of essays and theses in the form of paraphrase and quotations.
