What is the preferred method of drug administration?
Oral - easy to take and convenient
How is oral meds absorbed?
gastrointestinal tract - small intestine
Would you crush extended release capsules?
No, always check if meds can be crushed
What are parenteral meds?
Meds given by:
- subcutaneous injection
- Intramuscular
- Intradermal
- Intravenously (IV)
How are parenteral drugs absorbed?
Directly into the bloodstream
What is Epogen?
Increases the production of red blood cells
What is Fragmin?
anticoagulant that prevents the clotting of blood
What is Penicillin?
An antibiotic
What is Heparin?
an anticoagulant that inhibits clotting of the blood
What is insulin?
A hormone secreted by the pancreas that lowers blood glucose.
What drugs must be given subcutaneously or IV?
heparin, insulin, and epogen
Large dose of heparin can cause what?
hemorrhage
What can too high of a dose of insulin do to a patient?
Cause them to go into insulin shock.
What can too little of a dose of insulin do to a patient?
Result in a diabetic coma
