-executive order 8802 was signed
-many african Americans moved away from the south
-hard to find jobs, especially good paying ones, as a person of color

what did rena price have to do with the riots?
her and her son getting arrested were the tipping point of when people had had enough of the racial discrimination and unfair treatment (especially from police).
what was the deal with lacine holland?
she was a bystander who did not participate in the riots. her neighbor’s friend was killed and the market where her husband worked was burned
who were the staple singers?
a gospel/soul band that started in Chicago with Pops Staples and his kids
what are some facts about the staple singers?
many inspirations through the different generations, they were signed to Stax for a while but didn’t record in Memphis. Many lyrics were improvised
What was the great migration?
a large time period after the Civil War in which African-Americans left the south and traveled to the rest of America
why did migrants leave the south?
to escape racism
what is blues?
originated in the deep south, coming from spirituals and chants
what genres/people did blues influence
rock, Johnny Cash, AC/DC
What were the different styles of blues?
Mississippi–delta blues (the beggining), Chicago Blues, Memphis (BB King)
How was chicago blues different from delta blues?
different instruments (more modern ex. electric guitar, bass guitar, drums)
what was soul music?
derived from other black music like gospel and blues, it was often about romance, relationships, and civil rights
what kind of music did stax have?
soul, gospel, and blues
how did stax change?
it was owned by two white siblings but when Rufus Thomas (funky chicken) and his daughter came, they changed the whole idea of STAX
why was there a hotel built on central?
to avoid restrictions and make a hub for black people in LA. It was originally for a convention by the NAACP and the people needed a place to stay
What was the deal with jazz nights at the dunbar?
jam sessions would happen with musicians
whats gospel?
religious black music, often sung by a choir with a leader
