Notes Flashcards
Tissue definition
Cells organized by similarity in a group
Histology definition
The study of tissues
4 major tissues
Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, and Nervous
What does epithelial tissues do?
Covers the body surface, organs, lining of body cavities, and hollow organs.
Basement membrane definition
A thin, non-living layer that anchors the epithelium
Epithelial tissues lack what?
blood vessels
Epithelial Tissue functions
Being a protective barrier, secretion, absorption, and excretion
Tissues are classified how?
shape and number of layers
Squamous characteristics
thin, flattened, irregularly-shaped cells
Cuboidal characteristics
cubelike cells
Columnar characteristics
elongated cells
Simple chararcteristics
single layer
Stratified characteristics
two or more layers
Connective Tissues provide what?
support and protection
Fibroblasts definition
most common fixed cell in connective tissues
- star shaped, and produce fibers
Macrophages definition
mostly white blood cells
- usually attached to fiber
- carry on phagocytosis and help with immunity
Mast Cells definition
large and near blood vessels
- prevents blood clotting
- promotes inflammation
3 specialized connective tissues
Cartilage, bone, and blood
Membrane definition
Sheets of cells made up of epithelial and connective tissues
Muscle Tissues definiton
Ability to contract and move body parts
-sometimes called muscle fibers
Nervous Tissue definition
found in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves
-transmit impulses down path of neurons
Chemistry definition
the composition of substances and how they change
