What is a saddle nose deformity?
Necrosis of the cartilaginous septum causing the bridge of the nose to droop in the middle like a saddly
Why might you get a saddle nose deformitiy?
Repeated trauma
Untreated septal haematoma
Chronic inflammatory condition such as wegners granulomatosis, syphillis and TB
Which bone forms the upper border of the nasopharynx?
The cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone
What is the predominant epithelium lining the nasal mucosa?
Ciliated columnar
What is rhinitis medicaentosa?
Excessive use of nasal decongestents (esp vasoconstrictors) causes rebound congestion
A elderly patient appears to have a chronic drip at the end of their nose. What treatment might help?
Ipratropium bromide/atropine like nasal spray
A patient presents with a large furnurcle on the end of their nose.. What do you do?
Systemic antibiotics
Drainage if the antibiotic treatment does not help.
What are the two most common bacterial organisms that cause sinusitis?
Strep pneumonia
Haemophilus influenzae
How do you treat infective rhinosinusitis?
Nasal decongestant
Analgesia
Penicillin
A patient who has had acute rhinosinusitis for the past week presents with a hugely swollen eye. What is this and what do you do?
Orbital cellulitis
IV antibiotics
Refer urgently to opthalmology
A child presents with a unilateral foul smelling discharge.

A 87 year old chinese patient presents with unilateral nasal obstruction and blood stained nasal discharge from that nostril. On examination he has swollen cervical lymph nodes.
