anterior - lips
superior - hard palate + soft palate
lateral - cheeks
inferior - tongue
hard palate + soft palate
Uvula
hard - anterior, whitish in colour, bony
soft - posterior, pinkier, a mobile arch of muscle
uvula - an extension of the soft palate
Describe the anatomy and FN of the tongue
- striated muscle
- papillae: round, bumpy elevations on the dorsal aspect
- vallate papillae: normal inverted V shape projections on dorsoposterior aspect
frenulum: connects tongue to floor of mouth
FN: mastication, swallowing, speech, taste
Name and describe the 3 salivary glands
parotid - largest, within cheeks
sublingual - smallest, located at the floor of moth
submandibular - found @ angle of jaw
FN: all 3 secrete saliva to start digestion of food
teeth (adults vs children)
- teeth develop in utero
- children have 20 temporary (deciduous) teeth that erupt between 6-24 months and lost/replaced between 6-12 years
