A

12th to 14th August 1969 - thousands of apprentice boys marched through Derry and were met with violence in Bogside. Wilson sent British troops to quell the violence

Burntollet Incident

A

1968/1969 - O’Neill gave a plea via television in an attempt to prevent further riots but this was ignored and the people’s democracy marched through derry on Jan 4th 1969 and were attacked on Burntollet Bridge

A

A prominent figure in the civil rights movement - became an mp in 1969 but was jailed for her involvement in the battle of bogside

O’Neill’s five point plan

A

Announced 22nd Nov 1968
- points system introduced to ensure better council house allocation
- londonderry corporation replaced with a development commission
- some of the 1922 special powers act to be repealed
- ombudsman established
- removal of additional votes for business owners

What officially sparked the troubles and when?

A

1966 - 77 year old protestant Mary Gould is killed on 7th may after the UVF attack the wrong address. 18 year old Catholic, Peter Ward, was also shot dead on 26th June.
