  • MP Airey Neave assassinated on 30th March with a bomb planted in his car
  • IRA bomb killed 4 on August 27th including Queen Elizabeth’s cousin, Lord Mountbatten

Death of Bobby Sands

A

5th May 1981 - died in a maze prison after hunger striking for 66 days. While interned he had been elected MP for Sinn Fein and therefore died a martyr. 100 000 attended his funeral

Anglo-Irish Agreement

A

15th Nov 1985 - declared that no constitutional changes were to be made without majority consent and Dublin could still forward ideas and concerns. 15 ulster MPs resigned as a result and it was widely rejected by most unionists. Failed to have any long term success although did lay the groundworks for later agreements

Brighton Bombing

A

12th October 1984 - attempted assassination of Thatcher at the Grand Hotel in Brighton. Although she remained unscathed, 5 days and Norman Tebbit’s wife became permanently disabled

Enniskillen Massacre

A

8th November 1987 - IRA bomb exploded near the towns war memorial during a remembrance Sunday service - 8 dead and 63 injured

Death on the rock and subsequent shooting?

A

March 1988 - 3 provisional IRA members shot dead by SAS members in Gibraltar seemingly without warning. At their funeral on 16th March, Ulster Defence Association member, Michael Stone, attacked leading to a further 3 deaths
