Church owned lots of land which peasants worked on for free
Tithe of 10% produce
Only church produced books and controlled what was published
Leading church members advised king -Witan
Dealt with crime on church land

How did LanFranc reform church?
Created synods ( church councils ) to spread reform
Anglo Saxon bishops replaced by Norman’s + by 1080 only Anglo Saxon was Wulfstan of Worcester
Dioceses ( land controlled by church ) divided in to archdeaconries and deaneries so church had more control
1/3 bishops moved to important towns/cities
In 1076 decided clergy only tried by church courts
Most Anglo Saxon priest remained in jobs so peasants didn’t notice too much change
The authority of Canterbury ?
LanFranc appointed archbishop canterbury 1070
Thomas archbishop of York rivalled his position of primary ( leader of English church)
William forced him to submit to LanFranc
Position confirmed in 1972
