A motte was a small artificial hill with a wooden tower or keep at the top

A large ditch and bank enclosure witch surrounded the motte
What were the main defensive features of a castle?

Why were castles so difficult to capture?
The walls were five meters thick and castles were surrounded by moats making it very hard to capture
