myelosuppression
decrease in the production of blood cells which may lead to low blood count
pancytopenia
a lowering of all three types of blood cells, RBC, WBC, platelets, which may lead to low blood platelet and/or low WBC count
anemia
a decrease in the number of RBC which may lead to low rbc count
thrombocytopenia
a decrease in the number of platelets which may lead to low blood platelet count
neutropenia
a decrease in the number of neutrophils which may lead to low wbc count
granulocytopenia
a decrease in the number of granulocytes, which include neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils, which may lead to low wbc count
what are the 2 collection procedures for blood
Skin puncture
veni puncture
what is involved in a skin puncture (4)
finger/ear lobe, big toe/heel capillaries
skin is cleaned and allowed to dry then punctured at approx 2mm
blood is collected in microtube or on a slide
apply pressure for one minute and apply the band-aid
what is involved in a veni puncture (7)
- anticubital vein used most often
- position arm with palm up to expose vein and apply tourniquet
- ask pt to make a fist (helps congest vein)
- skin is cleaned and allowed to dry
- needle is then inserted into vein and blood is collected in Vacu container; remove tourniquet
- after needle is removed pressure must be applied for several minutes to avoid risk of developing a hematoma
- band aid is applied
leukopenia
a decrease in the total number of wbc which may lead to low wbc count
