1
Q
what are these
A
fordyce spots
2
Q
what are fordyce spots
A
- sebaceous glands
- yellow bumps
- 60-75% adults
- buccal mucosa and lips
- no associated pathology
3
Q
what is this
A
-linea alba
4
Q
what is lines alba
A
- horizontal, asymptomatic, white lesion
- along occlusl plane
5
Q
what can be histologically seen in linea alba
A
- hyperkeratosis
- prominent, or reduced granular layer
- acanthosis
- increased number of squamous cells, resulting in thickening
6
Q
what is this
A
geographic tongue
7
Q
what is geographic tongue
A
- benign migratory glossitis or erythema migrans
- 3% of population
- usually asymptomatic can be triggered by spicy
- loss of filiform papillae - areas of tongue atrophy and hyperkeratinisation
8
Q
what is this ?
A
fissured tongue
9
Q
what is fissured tongue
A
- variation of normal anatomy
- occur later in life
- no treatment necessary
- commonly presents concomitantlyy with geographic tongue
- encourage good OH
- consider lightly brushing tongue
10
Q
what is this
A
black hairy tongue
11
Q
what is black hairy tongue
A
- hyperplasia of filiform papillae
- build up of bacteria and food debris
- pigment inducing fungi and bacteria
- cause unknown : maybe smoking, antibiotics, chlorhexidine mouthwash, poor OH
12
Q
how to treat black hairy tongue
A
- stop smoking
- stay hydrated
- lightly brush tongue
- exfoliate it lightly - peach stones
- eat fresh pineapple
13
Q
what is this
A
desquamative gingivitis
14
Q
what is desquamative gingivitis
A
- full thickness erythema of gingiva
- descriptive term
-exacerbated by plaque
15
Q
what is this
A
bony exostosis
16
Q
what is a bony exostosis
A
- benigin overgrowth of calcified bone - associated with parafunction
- 30-40% have them
- can be on
- palate - torus palatinus
- mandible - torus mandibularis (typically lingually)
- buccal alveolus
17
Q
what should be asked about someone with bony exostosis
A
- gi symptoms - gardeners syndrome
18
Q
what is this and its causes
A
- physiological pigmentation
-melanin - consider ; Addisons, smokers melanosis, drug related pigmentation
