Nonrenwable & Renewable Energy Resources Flashcards
Hydrocarbons
A substance (such as coal or natural gas) that contains only carbon and hydrogen
Fossil fuels
A fuel that is formed in the earth from dead plants and animals.
Petroleum
A kind of oil that comes from the ground and that is the source of gasoline and other products.
Refinery
A place where the unwanted substances in something are removed
Coal
A black hard substance with in the earth that is used as a fuel
Oil
I thick black liquid that comes from the ground and that is used in making various products
Natural gas
Gas issuing from the earths crust through natural openings or bored wells
Nonrenewable resources
A resource that once it’s used, it’s gone
Renewable resource
Something that can be replaced (corn).
Coal formation
Decomposing plant (organic) matter, layers upon layers of sediment cover the organic material, condensed under high pressure, hundreds of million years old.
Greenhouse gas
Any of a various gaseous compounds that absorb infrared radiation (carbon dioxide).
Solar energy
Powered by the sun
Radiant energy
Energy traveling as electromagnetic waves.
Thermal energy
Energy in the form of heat.
Passive solar heating
Windows, floors, and walls made to collect solar energy.
