Tells the full life of another person, usually giving a scope of who they are and their place in history
Biography
A book of writing that looks back at your full, entire life and place in history, usually written near end of life.
Autobiography
Narrates a portion of your life (not the whole thing) while employing the conventions of fiction such as diologue, scene, and setting.
Memoir
Focuses on the minutiae of daily life. Its distinguished from the formal essay by its friendly tone and loose structure.
Personal essay
Sometimes called an op-ed or editorial, this has a rich history in magazines and newspapers. The world is filled with issues and the nonfiction writer is invited to weigh in.
Persuasive essay
Type of personal essay that combines both prose and poetry. It is typically short.
Lyric essay
Uses lively language to tell a heavily researched story. He or she is usually a part of the story as a journalist.
Narrative jourmalism
Written in letter form, journal, or diary entry, this piece is addressed to a particular person or organization, but is intended for gen. public to read
Open letter
The underlying point or theme. What is the piece about beyond literal subject matter?
Deeper subject
Defies traditional writing norms and redefines boundaries of storytelling
Experimental form
How a writer expresses uncertainty, often using words like: may, could, possibly, might, maybe, think.
Hedging Language
The author’s thoughts, feelings, and opinions about an experience
Personal reflection
A type of figurative language that has another layer of meaning with its actual meaning. its used for a purpose, to challenge the reader, emphasize ideas, and raise doubt, A question you don’t really want the answer to.
Rhetorical questions
A truth or experience that applies to all people regardless of time and place. (love, loss, mortality, struggles.)
Universal truth
An author’s voice consists of many things, including word choice, sentence structure, rhythm, and personality of the writer.
