Non-renewable energy Flashcards
1
Q
Renewable energy
A
- energy which can be recycled and has an infinite supply
- the most common forms are: wind power, hydroelectric power, solar energy, and geothermal energy
2
Q
Wind power
A
the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy, using wind turbines to make electricity
3
Q
Hydroelectric power
A
- electricity that is generated by hydropower (water)
- electricity is produced by the force of flowing water
- it is the most widely used form of renewable energy
4
Q
Solar energy
A
- for solar energy to be generated, the most common way is to use solar panels
- solar cells are devices that convert light energy directly into electrical energy
5
Q
Geothermal energy
A
in volcanic regions, it is possible to use the natural heat of the earth to generate electricity
6
Q
What is non-renewable energy?
A
- energy that will eventually run out one day
- includes coal, oil, and gas (fossil fuels)
7
Q
Fossil fuels
A
- created as the remains of marine creatures decayed millions of years ago, under huge amounts of pressure and heat
- we burn fossil fuels to create energy and electricity
