non reducing sugar Flashcards
What chemicals are used
Dilute hydrochloric acid
sodium hydrogencarbonate
what test is important to do before this test
Conduct a reducing sugar test to check they are not present
What are the steps
-test for reducing sugars
-take sample add HCl- and heat in water bath
-cool solution
- neutralise with sodium hydrogencarbonate
-Test for reducing sugars again
what colour precipitate will show for a positive result
green
yellow
orange
red
(depends on conc)
After boiling the sample with HCL, you leave it to cool and neutralise with sodium hydrogencarbonate. What piece of equipment can be used to indicate wether the solution has been neutralised
Litmus paper to determine the pH
after neutralised with sodium hydrogencarbonate, you must add a little more sodium hydrogen carbonate. Why?
conditions need to be a little alkaline for the test to work
how many times do you have to do the reducing test to test for non- reducing sugar
