non-random sampling Flashcards
what are the two types of non random sampling?
quota, opportunity
What is quota sampling?
when an interviewer selects a sample that reflects the characteristics of the whole population.
How do you carry out quota sampling?
. divide the population into groups according to a given characteristic.
. the size of each group determines the proportion of the sample that should have that characteristic.
What is opportunity sampling?
it consists of taking the sample from people who are available at the time the study is carried out and who fit the criteria that you are looking for.
What are the advantages of quota sampling?
. no sampling frame required
. quick
. easy
. inexpensive
.allows a small sample to be representative of the whole population
What are the disadvantages of quota sampling?
. could be biased
. non-responses are recorded
. population must be divided into groups which can be inaccurate, costly and time consuming
What are the advantages of opportunity sampling?
. easy to carry out
. inexpensive
What are the disadvantages of opportunity sampling?
. unlikely to provide a representative sample
. highly dependent on individual researcher.
