Non-Plant Toxicology Flashcards
What dose Vit E Deficiency cause in horses
Acquired Equine Motor Neuron Disease
Walks relatively well (short strides) but shakes when it stands, preference for laying down, weight loss
What does oversupplementation of vitamin A (and or vit D) in calves lead to
“buffalo calf syndrome” “hyena disease” - systemically well but permanently deformed calves :( dont excessively supplement your animals
Monensin toxicity horses
dose dependent toxicity in horses –> GI toxicity +/- lethargy, ataxia…..leading to cardiomyopathy
Lethal dose 1.4-3 mg/kg. Lavage the stomach, administer activated charcoal or mineral oil via NG tube
Molluscides (snail bait) toxicity
metaldehyde toxicoses - decreases GABA (excitatory effect leads to tremoring and many other neuro effects)
tricyclic antidepressants
cardiotoxic and acidosis - monitor EKG and treat with Na bicarbonate
Ionophore toxicity in cows
calves - often fatal but those that survive can have CHF
cyanide poisnoning cows
interferes with electron transport chain - sudden death (<2 hours) - dyspnea signs: bitter almond breath smell
Plant: sorghum,
Dichlorobenzene (deoderant cakes)
tent to have OPPs - seizures in dogs that get into trash
Toad poisoning
local effects (salivation, vomiting) ….. marine toad can be toxic/fatal (Hawaii, Florida)
