non periodic table definitions Flashcards
matter
anything that takes up space and has mass: solid, liquid, gas
particle theory
- all matter is made up of tiny particles that have empty spaces between them
- different substances are made up of different kinds of particles
- particles attract each other
- particles increase/decrease movement based on temperature
- particles are in a constant random motion
physical properties
are determined without changing the composition of that substance
chemical properties
are determined by changing the composition of a substance, the original substance is rearranged
qualitative properties
do not provide numerical information: 5 sense, optical clarity, brittleness, malleability, ductility
quantitative properties
measured and has a numerical value: conductivity, density, viscosity, solubility, hardness, melting/boiling/freezing point
physical change
a change in which the composition of the substance remains unaltered and no new substance (s) are formed: change of state
chemical change
always accompanied by a change in the starting substance (s) and the production of new substance (s): colour/odour change, bubbles, new solid, light/temperature change
density
ratio of mass to volume
mechanical mixture
a mixture in which the substances in it are distinguishable from each other
solution
looks like a pure substance but contains more than one type of particle, cannot visibly distinguish
