Non-Metal Tests Flashcards
1
Q
What is the test for carbonate ions?
A
Firstly add dilute HCl to the sample. A gas will then be given off. Run this gas through limewater and if the limewater turns cloudy Carbonate ions are present.
2
Q
What is the test for sulfate ions?
A
Firstly add dilute HCl to the sample. Next adds some barium chloride which will form a white precipitate if sulfate ions are present.
3
Q
What is the test for halide ions?
A
Firstly add dilute nitric acid to the sample followed by dilute silver nitrate. A white precipitate will form if chloride ions are present, a cream precipitate for bromide ions and a yellow precipitate for iodide ions.
