Q

Explain why Spain was in a poor economic situation after World War One, and how this led to the election of a Republican government made up of communists in 1936.

A

Spain lost many colonies after WWI, leading to an economic depression. This made the Spanish Monarchy quite weak, and Communists demanded a government similar to the new Soviet system in Russia

Q

Who was Franco? What was his background? What did he think of communism?

A

Spanish fascist dictator who overthrew the Second Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War.
He ruled at the start, during, and after WWII. He did not like communism, and since the Spanish Monarchy was being challenged by communists, right-wing Franco took action into his own hands as a general of an army in Morocco, a Spanish colony.
He sided with the Catholic church to win the support of the people.

Q

List ways that countries (like Canada, Britain, and others) were prevented from helping democracy in Spain.

A

initially agreed to practice non-intervention, and Canada, Britain, and France all practiced this together and even made a law collectively to make it illegal for Canadians to join a foreign army.

Germany and Italy though, fellow fascists, gave support to Franco in his right-wing troops.

Q

Why did Germany give support to Franco/ want to participate in the Spanish Civil war?

A

Germany in particular saw this as a way to test out their war weapons and new air force. Germans ALSO used this to test the dedication their former enemies had to enforce the Treaty of Versailles.
