Non-identity Flashcards
1
Q
the non-identity problem:
A
- ## The non-identity problem is a problem for the attempt of trying to vindicate this the intuition that we can now wrong people who do not yet exist but will exist in the future
2
Q
non- identity case:
A
- A case in which in individual appears to be wronged by an action that is a condition of their own worthwhile condition.
3
Q
PLAUSIBLE THEORY OF HARM
A
- what it is to cause someone harm is to make them worse off than they otherwise would have been.
- if you haven’t made someone worse off than they otherwise would have been, then, all other things being equal, you haven’t harmed them.
4
Q
Far reaching consequences:
A
- the non-identity problem is not merely a philosophical puzzle
5
Q
DORAN SMOLKIN
A
- Offer two putative solutions to the non-identity problem.
- Explain why these putative solutions are inadequate.
- Pave the way for a more promising approach.
6
Q
CLASH OF CLAIMS
A
- This 14-year old girl wrongs Jack.
- The way that she wrongs Jack is by causing him harm.
- The only way she could have caused Jack harm is by making him worse off than he otherwise could have been.
- Jack is not made worse off than he otherwise could have been.
7
Q
PROPOSED SOLUTION 1
A
- Thomas Schwartz’s proposed solution is to reject claim 1, since Jake isn made
- worse off then it does appear that jack is harmed so Jack is not wronged
- but there is harm in the vicinity- the girl her family, society,
8
Q
SMOLKIN’S RESPONSE
A
- the theory might work in the girl case but it’s not clear that it will work for all other non-identity cases
- it doesn’t capture the intuition that the wrongness has something to do with the effects of one’s actions on non-identity cases.
