Non-Alkaloid Hallucinogens Flashcards
Marijuana
What is used
For drug use want Resin from flowering head of unfertilized female plant (sensemilla)
Once fertalized produces seeds - decreased quality and change in some chemical compounds (less thc/cbd concentration)
For hemp seeds etc… want fertilization
Species;
Really all cannabis sativa, there are subtypes C. ruderalis (low in psychoactives), and C. indica (is this really a separate species…?)
Proportions of THC vs CBD
Types
Drug type- high psychoactives
Intermediate type
Hemp fiber type - breed out hallucinogens
Inital use
Plant for fibers and seed (food/oil)
China- discussed intoxicating qualities, but knowledge lost/suppressed
Fire emperor described fruit/seeds
India Vedas, hemp-sacred grass
Assyrians used as incense
Scythians (central asia) burned help in steam baths - narcotic smoke .. thought this group introduced cannabis to europe.
Ancient rome - intoxicating effects, fibers, medicine (Galen)
Use in India
Bhang,
- beverage
Ganja,
-smoking the bud, about 3x potent as bhang, sometimes with tabacco or datura
Charas
- hash, 4-8 times more potent than bhang
Introductions
Introduced from India to Africa
Kif (trichomes in the bud) dagga (general terms for the plant)
Medicinal and intoxicant
Americans: mexico and jamaica (rastafarians - religous/political group, unification of african people and mysticism, and protestant christianity - old testament - )
US -
Canada -
Marijuana in Canada
strict in 60s
Marijuana in US
Harry Anslinger- against marijuana - violent behaviour (not true)
Tax act -
Marijuana active
THC - hallucinogen,
CBD - non hallucinogenic, inhibits anxiety often associated with high THC intake
MOA: THC binds to cannabinoid receptors, mimics anandamine (joy/bliss, modulate mood, appetite, perception time, small dopamine release). Broken down quickly, But THC at higher concentration and more persistent (lot of dopamine) and inhibits GABA (suppresses dopamine)
